Taipei Backstage Pool

You can stretch and move all you want when you are here!

The Taipei Backstage Pool currently offers the largest rehearsal space in Taipei City. It is spacious, without any pillars to block your sight, and it has a high ceiling. It can be used for all forms of artistic rehearsals. The venue used to be the Dihua Heated Swimming Pool, built to fulfill the needs of the city residents. It is close to the Dihua Recreational Sports Park and located in a convenient and functional area. Because of changes over time, the pool was closed in 2012. After being left idle for a few years, the Department of Cultural Affairs of the Taipei City Government decided to repurpose it into a rehearsal space for the performing arts.

The performing arts includes a vast array of forms, including theater, dance, musicals, puppet shows, circus performances, and Taiwanese traditional theater, which all have different rehearsal requirements. For example, Taiwanese traditional theater might include spear dancing, circus performances often incorporate aerial acrobatics, musicals rely much on sound effects, and theater requires precise blocking (movement and positioning of actors on stage). Therefore, the completion of these works of art is strongly correlated to whether rehearsal spaces can meet these requirements.

In the past, many performing arts teams could only rehearse in basements or households which were small, had low ceilings, and sometimes had obstacles obstructing their view. Team members had to rely on their experience and imagination to make up for the lack of sufficient rehearsal space. Now, what once used to be a swimming pool has been transformed into a rehearsal space conveniently blessed with a large space, high ceilings, and no pillars. It has become a cherished resource and source of support for performing artists through difficult times.

The performers will carry on the image of water left behind by the swimming pool. Creativity is just like a stream of water, which will continue to ebb and flow, bringing brilliance to our lives.

Construction for the Taipei Backstage Pool was completed in December 2019, equipping it with air conditioning, soundproofing equipment, and freight elevators. It has officially become the first large-scale rehearsal space in Taiwan to offer an environment closest to that of real performances, which also offers rehearsal and trial performance functions. The venue kept the swimming pool's irreplaceable features (spacious, no pillars, high ceiling) and turned it into two rectangular rehearsal spaces, one large and one small, where large props, stage equipment, lighting effects used in official performances can all be tested. Television, movie, and music industry teams can also shoot scenes set in theaters or rehearsal spaces (under the precondition that they are not for commercial purposes). This can promote more exchange between various industries.

In the future, we hope that the comprehensive facilities at the Taipei Backstage Pool can provide momentum for artistic teams to conduct smoother performances, and also be used to educate audience members, nurture talent, and invigorate the community. It will become the backstage of the Taipei Performing Arts Center.

Welcome to the Taipei Backstage Pool!
