Do you think school is like hell? If there was a school for ghosts in the underworld, wouldn't it be even worse than hell? In this journey through the underworld, Poyouset’s original music theater depicts an educator's predicament today with truth-revealing fantasy and poignant humor.

Kong Fuzhi was about to get the excellent teacher certificate, but died accidentally before. She is then assigned to work as a teacher in the Underworld Academy. Haunted by parents‘ protests and her own past ghosts, the underworld seems to be as merciless as up there. What is to be done?

The maverick narrative is accompanied by a live ensemble of musicians that fuse Jinju elements into the soundscape, a signature of Poyouset’s creations that experiment with the potential of the Jinju repertoire. Wittily referencing well-known underworld figures in Chinese folklore, School of the Underworld is a reinterpretation of traditional music theater that weaves old-time tales with modern-day dilemmas.

Poyouset has accumulated 30 original productions since 2007. They have been nominated for the Taishin Arts Award six times, selected as the Outstanding Performing Arts Group in Taoyuan four times, and were recognized as part of Taiwan Top 100 Performing Arts Groups by the National Culture and Arts Foundation in 2021.

In 2016, they participated in the Asia Theatre Directors Festival in Japan. With the soul of Beijing Opera and the genes of contemporary theater, Poyouset shares their perspectives on life through original stories with their audience.

Their creative direction includes experimenting with traditional opera, modernizing opera, and reflecting contemporary issues through original texts. Their goal is to find a stylized form of expression for opera in modern times. Telling stories and performing theater in their own unique way is their pursuit and continuous dream.
